 Parts of Speech 


Parts of speech are made of two words.

  • Parts = means segments or sections
  • Speech = means talking or conversation

    So, Parts of Speech mean sections of conversation. It is one of the traditional classifications of words that form our speech. Or Words that are divided into 9 classes or groups according to their grammatical functions in a sentence is called Parts of Speech. 

    We can classify English words into 9 basic categories called "Parts of Speech" or "Word Classes". It is very important to recognize the parts of speech. It helps you to analyze and understand sentences. It also helps you to form good sentences.

    Part of speech is a term for one of the nine main categories in traditional grammar in which words are categorized according to their functions in the sentence. Learning the names of parts of speech may not make you intelligent, healthy, rich, or wise. In fact, just learning the names of parts of a speech doesn't make you a better writer. However, by getting acquainted with these tags you will gain a basic understanding of sentence structure and the English language. Every sentence you write or speak in English contains words that appear in one of the nine parts of the speech. These include nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, verbs, metaphors, connections, subject/determinants, and interactions.

    A part of Speech is a traditional term that refers to the words that form the speech. Or Words that are divided into different groups or classes according to their grammatical functions in a sentence are called parts of speech.

    

    There are 9 parts of speech in English:

  1. Noun 
  2. Pronoun 
  3. Adjective 
  4. Verb 
  5. Adverb  
  6. Conjunction 
  7. Interjection 
  8. Determiners or Articles 
  9. Preposition

Divided into 2 Classes

The idea is that open classes can be modified and added to as the language develops and closed classes are pretty much set in stone. For example, new nouns are created every day, but conjunctions never change. Parts of speech are commonly divided into two classes.


Open class elements (They allow grammatical change)

  1. noun                 ex: beauty
  2. verbs (very important)         ex: beautify
  3. adjective                 ex: beautiful
  4. adverb                 ex: beautifully



Closed class elements (They allow no grammatical change)

  1. Pronoun                 ex: he, she
  2. Conjunction         ex: but, and 
  3. Preposition         ex: in, above
  4. Interjection         ex: wow, hurrah
  5. Articles or Determiners                 ex: a, an, the, that, those, these 




Definition in One Sentence

Noun: A noun is a word used to refer to peoples, animals, objects, substances, states, events, ideas, and feelings.  i.e., Haider, table, love, freedom.

Pronoun: A pronoun is used in the place of nouns or phrases.  i.e., he, she, it, they.

Adjective: An adjective is used to describe or explain a noun or pronoun. i.e., good, beautiful, nice, my.

Verb: A verb is used to show a state of being or action. i.e., go, write, be.

Adverb: An adverb is used to modify a verb, adjectives, and other adverbs.  i.e., never, there, completely.

Conjunction: Conjunctions join clauses or sentences or words.  i.e., and, but, when.

Interjections: Interjections are used to show surprises or emotions.  i.e., Oh! Good Lord. 

Articles or Determiners: They are like adjectives by modifying nouns. articles: a, an, the; Determiners: these, that, those, enough, much, few, which, what i.e., an, a, the, these, that, 

Preposition: Prepositions are used to form a sentence before a noun, indicating where, when, how, and why.  i.e., in, above, to, for, at.
